The cemetery was opened in October of 1892 and currently covers an area of about 96437 square meters (little less than 29 acres).
The chapel (St. Fidelis-Kirche) was built in 1926-27, but totally destroyed in the war in 1943. Rebuilt in its current form in 1951. 12 Catholic congregations are burying their dead on this cemetery.
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (20 years for this cemetery) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse have decomposed naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 20 years. War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever.
