Once located in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia, this cemetery, which is now defunct, was operated between 1831 and 1892. It was known by several names including:
Kensington Union Burial Grounds (named by the Philadelphia Board of Health between 1838-1860)
West Street Burial Ground (because its eastern border was West Street, an earlier name for Belgrade Street)
German Burial Ground (as named on the Hopkins Atlas of 1875)
Union Burial Ground (because of its association with the Union Burial Ground Association)
Malt House Ground (because it sat north of and next to Frederick Gaul's Malt House)
Thumlert Cemetery (in later years named after a caretaker, undertaker and part owner)
The information above was found in the book "Palmer Cemetery ad the Historical Burial Grounds of Kensington and Fishtown," by Kenneth W. Milano.
Remains were removed to Northwood Cemetery
