Michael Dawley Lot
Also known as Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Exeter #99
Exeter, Washington County, Rhode Island, USA
Rhode Island Historical Cemetery - Exeter #99
This cemetery has historically been called the Michael Dawley Cemetery … Based on who are buried here and the family history, I would say that the first to be associated with this property was probably Michael's grandson John Dawley., who is our 6th Great Grandfather
In John's will of 1749 he leaves land to all of his sons, John –Michael – Daniel – Samuel – Nathan – William, and the homestead to youngest son William. William died two months after the will was probated in 1753. I believe that William then left the homestead to his brother Nathan as there is a variety of Dawley cousins buried in this lot, all descending from Nathan.
In John Sterling and James E Good's book ‘Exeter, Rhode Island Historical Cemeteries' it indicates that there are 40 burials in this lot but only 9 headstones are still visible in 2010. The area is very overgrown and I would not be surprised that with a little clearing that more would be uncovered.
The cemetery is located about 300 yards NNW of the intersection of Liberty Church Rd and Hog Hill Rd. A few hundred feet East of the cemetery a foundation of what I believe to be the 1740 Dawley Homestead can be located. We last visited in May 2010 – Val Dawley Horner and Jim Nygard
