Add PhotosThe Seventh Presbyterian Church was organized in 1804 as a Congregational church, the gentlemen composing it being English Independents who had been worshiping with the Second Presbyterian Church, now at 21st and Walnut Streets, but who conceived the idea of establishing an English Independency in Philadelphia. A pastor, Reverend John Hay, was called, and the first edifice, which was known as the Independent Tabernacle, was erected in Ranstead Court upon the site now occupied in part by the Philadelphia Bourse. It was built in the years 1805-6.
Subsequently it was deemed expedient by a majority of the congregation to endeavor to effect a union with some other religious body of the same faith and order, even if there should be some unessential difference in the form of church government. After serious consideration of the subject, this finally led to a union with the Reformed Dutch Church in 1816, and the congregation took on the name the "Second Dutch Reformed Church."
On the 18th of October, 1819, the pew-holders and communicants of the church requested the Consistory to apply to the Classis of Philadelphia for the dismissal of this church and congregation to the Presbytery of Philadelphia. Eventually the Presbytery of Philadelphia received the church and congregation under its care, with the name of the Seventh Presbyterian Church. This occurred on the 9th of November, 1819.
The church later merged with the Assembly Presbyterian Church in 1840. In the year 1842 the congregation sold their house of worship in Ranstead Court, and erected a church on Broad Street, above Chestnut, dedicated on December 31st of that year. It later took the name "Tabernacle Presbyterian Church" when it merged with the Sixth Presbyterian congregation in 1873, and, in 1883, moved to 38th and Chestnut Streets. It remains at 3700 Chestnut Street today as the Tabernacle United Church.
A burial ground was established at the churchyard in 1805; after the building on Ranstead Court was sold, the burials were disinterred and removed to Section C of the Woodlands Cemetery in July 1847.
A second burial ground, at 17th and Cherry Streets, was established by the congregation ca. 1808 and sold to the Tenth Presbyterian Church in 1832. Interments in this second cemetery were also removed in May, 1849 to the Woodlands Cemetery, Section C, Lots 498-500.
This burial ground should not be confused with the later burial grounds of the Second Reformed Dutch Church of Philadelphia, another congregation with the same name.
