Add PhotosThe church existed by 1088 and may have been built very shortly before that date. It comprises a nave with north and south aisles and a tower over the west end of the nave. In 1821 the east wall was set back seven feet to widen Spurriergate, and the church was re-licensed for marriages in 1953.
It is now the Spurriergate Centre. Its parish merged with that of All Saints Pavement.
Burial registers for the St Michael parish cover the period 1598 to 1883. These have been deposited with the Borthwick Institute for Archives, University of York, Heslington, York, YO10 5DD. Like all other church burial locations within the City of York, the St Michael Churchyard would have been closed to further burials by parliamentary order in December 1854. Most of its original churchyard is now covered by paving stone or other urban development. Subsequent burials from the parish would have occurred in public cemeteries such as York Cemetery.
