Pfarramt Selchow
Glasower Strasse 2
12529 Schönefeld-Selchow
This is the community cemetery in the little village of Selchow, managed by the Lutheran congregation of that village. It was opened after the century old cemetery around the village church was closed. It is surrounded by a 5 foot brick wall. Along that wall on the inside of the cemetery many family plots have survived and are still in use.
Please note that the graves in Germany are not perpetual. After a certain period of repose (20-30 years) the graves are being leveled and re-used. There is no toxic embalming being done in Germany, so the coffin and the corpse have decomposed naturally. If the family of the deceased decides to purchase another period the duration can be extended by another 30 years. War Graves are considered memorials and are kept up by the owner of the cemetery. Those are kept forever.

In German a Friedhof is usually a non-denominational and community cemetery. The Kirchhof describes a congregational cemetery (either Lutheran or Catholic) and it is most of the time located around a church or a chapel. It is not uncommon for a German village to have an old (closed) KIRCHHOF, and a modern day FRIEDHOF.
