Minsteracres, once the seat of the Silvertop family, is located in Northumberland, just at the border with Durham County. The closest town is Consett, in Durham, which serves as its postal address.
There was a Catholic mission at Minsteracres from 1765 which served not only the family, but all Catholics in the nearby area, and which utilized the Chapel within the estate house.
The present church, which adjoins the estate house, was built in 1854 by Henry Charles Silvertop, High Sheriff of Northumberland, and dedicated to St. Elizabeth of Hungary, the patron saint of his wife.
In 1949, the Silvertop family sold the estate to be converted to a Passionist Monastery. The present Retreat Centre was begun in the 1980's. Saint Elizabeth's is the community Church.
