Die Buchhorst zählt zu den beliebtesten Naherholungsgebieten Braunschweigs. Kaum einem Spaziergänger ist jedoch bekannt, dass sich dort einige der dunkelsten Kapitel deutscher Geschichte abgespielt haben. Schätzungsweise 28 Deserteure, ausländische Widerstandskämpfer und Kriegsgefangene wurden während des Zweiten Weltkrieges in einem der heute noch vorhandenen Kugelfänge des einstigen Schießübungsplatzes durch Erschießungskommandos hingerichtet. Die Anlage stammt teilweise noch aus der Wilhelminischen Kaiserzeit. Ein Initiativkreis bestehend aus der Stiftung Braunschweigischer Kulturbesitz, der Stiftung niedersächsische Gedenkstätten, des Friedenszentrums Braunschweig e.V., aus Historikern, Denkmalpflegern und lokalen Künstlern sowie der Stadt Braunschweig arbeitet gemeinsam an der Neugestaltung des Gedenkortes Buchhorst.[unknown source]
