Add PhotosZion Evangelical Church stood on Rittenhouse street, and its graveyard touched the northern boundary of what is today's Vernon Park. The congregation was German and English, as was common in "Ancient Germantown." The first three Sunday mornings of the month, services were conducted in German, and the last, in English. The earliest services were held in 1835.
The congregation eventually went defunct and the building was purchased by the Episcopal Church around 1904, becoming the Mission Church of Saint Barnabas for Colored People. Saint Barnabas eventually wanted to expand the building and tried to locate relatives of those from the Zion congregation buried there, which they did, but a few families could not be located. At the church's expense, those left behind were removed to another part of the property.
Saint Barnabas merged with nearby Saint Luke's church in 1968. Today, the building houses the Mount Tabor Baptist Church.
