Peter Otzen, a resident of South Adams county since 1907, died at his home 6 miles northeast of Blue Hill shortly after midnight Sunday morning. Although he had not been in good health for several years, Mr. Otzen became bed-fast in his last illness last Friday afternoon.
Peter Otzen was born on April 19, 1864, at Scht, Germany, the son of John E. and Katherina Johanna Otzen. He came to this country in 1892 and settled on a farm in Saunders county, near Cedar Bluffs. On March 3, 1904, he was married at Wahoo to Miss Anna M. Hansen of Cedar Bluffs. She passed away in February 1905. He was 78 years, 6 months and 26 days of age.
He came to Adams county in 1907 and has since that time lived on the farm located 4 miles north and 2 miles east of Blue Hill. Since 1926 his nephew, John E. Otzen, has lived with him, and since 1930 has operated the farm.
Mr. Otzen is survived by one sister and one brother, Mrs. Anna Tams and Hans Otzen, both living in Germany. Two sisters and two brothers preceded him in death. Mrs. Katherina Gosch and Miss Wibke Otzen, Franz Otzen and Joe E. Otzen, the latter being killed in World War I.
Survivors, his nearest of kin in the country, are his nephew, John E. Otzen and his nieces, Mrs. August Oye of Blue Hill, Mrs. Peter Lorenzen and Mrs. Hans H. Meyer, both of Woodward, Iowa.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul's Lutheran church in Blue Hill Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with the pastor, the Rev. J.N. Marxon in charge. Pallbearers were Mr. Otzen's neighbors, Arthur Krueger, Fred Krueger, Fred Mohlman, Albert Schulz, John Buss and Walter Kort. Burial was in the Leroy cemetery near Ayr. Merten Bros were in charge of arrangements.
