Mark Cartwright, son of Texas writer Gary Cartwright, died Monday of leukemia at his mother's home in Dunwoody, Ga., a suburb of Atlanta.

A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at University Presbyterian Church in Austin for Mr. Cartwright, 40. At 10 a.m. Friday there will be a memorial Mass at All Saints Catholic Church in Dunwoody.

Mr. Cartwright was found last July to have an aggressive form of leukemia. In February, his father placed a full-page ad in Texas Monthly stating, "Our last option is a bone marrow transplant. " Gary Cartwright has written for Texas Monthly for 25 years.

His books include Blood Will Tell, a chronicle of the Cullen Davis murder trial.

About a month ago, doctors told Mr. Cartwright he was too weak for additional chemotherapy.

"He had two very good weeks," Gary Cartwright said.

He attended the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Ga., Thursday and visited his two children in Little Rock, Ark., Friday.

He developed a fever late Friday and went to his mother's home in Atlanta, where he died Monday.

Gary Cartwright said he will work to raise awareness about the need for bone marrow donors and registration. He said although he was aware of the need for more donors and registrants, "I really didn't do anything. " It's difficult to understand the urgency of the problem "until it comes and visits you," he said.

Mark Cartwright was born in Dallas and graduated from an Atlanta high school. He attended the University of Texas and worked in magazine advertising and public relations in Dallas, Little Rock and Atlanta.

In addition to his father, Mr. Cartwright is survived by his mother, Barbara Crismond of Dunwoody; four sisters, Lea Hickman of Atlanta, Lisa Crismond of Atlanta, Kyle Gerdes of Wimberly, Texas, and Donna Erickson of Pomona, Mo.; a brother, John Crismond of Austin; a daughter, Katelyn Cartwright of Little Rock; a son, Malcolm Cartwright of Little Rock; and his stepmother, Phyllis Cartwright of Austin.
