Rites Sunday for Margaret Witt. Resident Here Since 1885 Dies at Home Thursday at the Age of 82 Years.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran church for Mrs. Margaret Witt, one of the community's oldest residents who settled here in 1885, and who passed away at her farm home north of Remsen Thursday night, July 8. Surviving are four sons. Mrs. Witt was 82 years old.
Mrs. Witt had been in feeble health for a number of years but not until the last two months was she a sick-room patient. Her death was due to complications and her infirmity, and the end was foreseen for several weeks.
Born February 22, 1861, in Holstein, Germany, she came to this county [country] with her parents at the age of seven years, the family settling in Benton county, Iowa. She lived with her parents until her marriage in 1877 at Vinton, Benton county, to Carsten Witt, then farming in that vicinity. The couple continued to farm there for eight years and in 1885 moved to Remsen, residing in town for nine years, then moving to a farm north of town. Soon after taking up farm life Mr. and Mrs. Witt purchased the farm which still is owned by the family and where Mrs. Witt resided until the time of her death. Two children were taken from the family circle in the diphtheria scourge of 1885-86, and Mr. Witt passed away in 1916.
The surviving children are John Witt of Le Mars, and August, Adolph and Walter Witt, all of Remsen. There are seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, besides many other relatives.
The deceased lady, among the early settlers of this territory, had hundreds of friends who join the family in sorrow over her loss. She was a devout member of the Evangelical Lutheran church; a woman possessed of many admirable qualities, and through her admirable character and charitable attitude and practices endeared herself to the many friends who enjoyed her acquaintance and companionship through her many years as an esteemed resident here.
Funeral services, beginning at the home at 1:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon and later in St. Paul's church, were conducted by the Rev. Paul Wuebben. Serving as pallbearers were four nephews- John, August, Adolph, Clarence, Claus and Harry Haack. The sacred hymns for the services were sung by a quartette consisting of Herman Engelbrecht, Marian Juhl, MayBelle Witt and Melvin Mortensen. Flower bearers were Mrs. Wm. Raveling, Mrs. John Haack and Miss Alma Haack. Interment was made in the Remsen cemetery.

Warner, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Haack, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Brown, Rock Rapids; Julius Haack, Canton, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Arvid Pedersen and daughter Lorraine, Inwood; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sanny and Mrs. Milton Nicks, Luverne, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Kruger and daughter Pauline, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Bossard and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Van Gelder, Ashton; Mr. and Mrs. P.
