Pioneer Resident Claimed by Death. John J. Haack, 85, Dies at Home Tuesday After a Brief Illness. Another old settler of this community who long since passed the fiftieth anniversary of his coming here as called to his eternal reward this week when John J. Haack, who lived here 64 years, died at his home Tuesday morning at the age of 85 years. Infirmities, plus the effects of influenza and a fall in his home a few days ago, hastened his death. Surviving are his wife, nine children and a sister.

Mr. Haack had been in failing health since an attack of influenza four months ago. Since then he remained close to this home and was periodically under a doctor's care. Last Thursday he suffered an attack of sudden weakness and dizziness, and fell to the floor of the living room. Mrs. Haack assisted him to the adjoining bedroom and he again fell before reaching the bed. He suffered severe bruises and several cuts and contusions about the face. Mr. Haack from that time never left his bed, and he passed away in sleep at 3:30 o'clock Tuesday morning.

The couple went to farming near Keystone and remained there four years and in 1885 came to their own farm 10 miles northeast of Remsen in Meadow township, having purchased the farm a year prior to their taking possession.

They farmed for 28 years in this locality and through their diligence, honesty and good business tactics, gained a generous competence to keep them in their declining years. Mr. and Mrs. Haack reared an excellent family and were counted among the substantial farmers of this community. Mr. Haack was a devoted husband and father, a loyal friend and a good citizen, and his many friends join this paper in extending sympathy to the bereaved ones over their loss.

Mr. and Mrs. Haack retired in 1913 and have lived in Remsen ever since. Mr. Haack was a lifelong member of the Evangelical Lutheran faith and during his residence here was a staunch member of St. Paul's congregation.

Mr. and Mrs. Haack were the parents of 11 children of whom nine are living, as follow: Amanda, Remsen; Clara, Remsen; Emma, now Mrs. Charles Schumacher, Remsen; Anna, now Mrs. Howard Smith, Ocheyedan; Ida, now Mrs. Ernest Schietzeit, Sioux City; Harry, Remsen; Bertha , now Mrs. Richard Janssen, Neptune; Alma, at home, and Effie, now Mrs. Peter Treinen, Remsen.

Pallbearers were: John and August Witt, and Joh, Adolph, Claus and August Haack, all nephews of the deceased. Flower bearers were Mrs. M. M. Milfs and Mrs. Catherine Heitman.
