Herlinda passed away peacefully at home at the age of 91. She was born in Goosecreek [sic], Texas and shortly thereafter moved to Michigan. During the Depression of the 1930's the family was repatriated to Mexico where she lived until age 18, before settling in Gallup, New Mexico where she met and married Salvador R. Martinez to whom she was happily married for 54 years. Together they came to settle in the Santa Clara Valley in 1945 and raised 5 children.
Herlinda was preceded in death by her husband Salvador, son Arthur Martinez, daughter Alejandra Valle, brothers Juan B. Garcia and Elias Sanchez. She is survived by her son John Martinez and his wife Diane, daughter Irma Terrazas, daughter Maria (Mary) Martinez and husband Danny Martinez, sister Josephine Romero, daughter-in-law Corina Martinez, son-in-law Juan Valle, along with 21 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 25 great-great-grandchildren.
Herlinda worked in the packing houses of various orchard ranches in the Santa Clara Valley, and later at the Exchange Linen Service, and also as a substitute cafeteria server for San Jose Unified School District. Most of her time was spent as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a breast cancer survivor of 38 years who in her 80's participated in the "Latinas Contra Cancer" fundraising walk in downtown San Jose with her son John. Herlinda will be dearly missed and will live on in the hearts of all who loved her.
Services will begin with visitation on Thursday, November 15, beginning at 5pm with a rosary at 7pm in Chapel of the Roses at Oak Hill Funeral Home on Curtner Ave. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Most Holy Trinity Church 2040 Nassau Dr. San Jose on Friday November 16 at 9am. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Memorial Park.
