Ed Ehrhardt was born in Ramona Kansas to Sam and Lizzie Ehrhardt. At the age of 5 his family headed to California and settled in the Lodi area where they became farmers, along with other relatives who also came West. My father was 1 of 6 children. He had an older brother Ezra, and younger brother Herb, sister Pearl, and brothers Ben and Richard.
Dad was a great athlete and loved playing baseball. He played for Lodi Supermold (where he worked for many years along side his father and brother). He was quite a slugger and had a huge batting average (on par with Babe Ruth). He was even scouted by Chicago White Sox. He picked up the nickname "Oxy" based on a player in SF who was a big hitter and because he ran like an ox.
Dad later got a job with the city of Lodi as a fireman, where he served for 2 yrs, then later joined the police dept, working for the city for 25 years in total. He became the first identification officer in Lodi taking courses from the FBI in fingerprinting, eliminating the need for sending fingerprints to Sacramento for identification. He obtained the rank of Sgt for his efforts and expanded his talents in photography.
He took the photography one step further and became a wedding photographer as a sideline opening Ehrhardt's Photo Shop. He and my mother took over 6000 weddings in the 40 yrs they ran the business together. His joke was "he took pictures of people who got in trouble during the week and pictures of those that wanted to get in trouble on the weekend".
Dad was also quite an engineer and wine maker. He could make just about anything. Show him something and he would be able to reverse engineer it. He also loved wine making and took that hobby to an advanced level once they retired and moved to Galt where he could grow his own vines and he could create his own distinct vintages of wine. He got many of his bottles second hand...from his high school friend Bob Mondavi (aka Robert Mondavi).
My dad may not have been wealthy man, but he was truly rich with all the friends he had. That is something I truly think made him a remarkable person.
