August C "Duke" Berberick of Portland died in a local hospital Wednesday of a stroke. He was 79. At his request, no services will be held. Interment will be private. Mr. Berberick was born in Topeka, Kan. on April 6, 1910, and moved to Portland as an infant. He graduated from Immaculate Heart Grade School and Benson Technical High School. During World War II, Mr. Berberick served in the Merchant Marine. He worked for the Northern Pacific Terminal as a steamfitter for 31 years, before retiring in 1975. He was a member of the Portland Police Auxiliary, the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 3862, and Beaverton Elks Lodge No 1989. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Elna "Billie"; daughters, Elise Kemp of Tacoma, Karen Jill Lavell of Portland and Barbara Moore of Gresham; brothers, George of Portland and John and Albert, both of Lincoln City; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The family suggests that remembrances be contributions to the Portland Police Auxiliary.
