A funeral for George Phillip Berberick of Northeast Portland, a retired Multnomah County sheriff's officer and prison guard, will be at noon Wednesday in the Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes. Mr. Berberick died of causes related to age Saturday in a Portland care center. He was 90. He was born March 20, 1901, in Topeka, Kan., but had lived in the Portland area since he was about 10 years old. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and later served in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve. Mr. Berberick worked at Union Pacific Railroad during his younger years, and then was a sheriff's officer and prison guard for Multnomah County for many years. He was employed as a flagger for the county until his retirement because of disability in 1962. Mr. Berberick was a member of the Grotto (the Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother Catholic Church). Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Virginia; sons, Bill and Robert of Portland and Donald of Downey, Calif.; daughters, Loretta Petersen of Milwaukie and Virginia Colbert of Portland; brothers, John and Albert of Lincoln City; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Willamette National Cemetery.
