Wilhelm Gülker, Fr Johann Wilhelm Horststmann and five other German settlers embarked on the ship Columbus on September 7, 1833 in Amsterdam, landed November 6, 1833 in New York, and purchased some land in Putnam County in December. Other members of this group of immigrants founding Glandorf, Ohio were Johan Francis Kahle, Christian Strope, F. Wischmann, Friedrich Bredeick and Mathias and Friedrich Bockrath.
In 1837, William traveled to Cincinnati and married Catherine Vogeding in Holy Trinity Church. In 1838, John and Catherine had a daughter but the daughter dies in the summer of 1839.
The 1840 US Census shows William and his first wife, Catherine, living in Glandorf.
William's first wife, Catherine, died in December 1840 shortly after giving birth to son John Henry.
In 1841, William travelled again to Cincinnati and married Anna Maria Altenda in Holy Trinity Church. Willam and Anna Marie have several children, Philomena, William, Mary and Bernard. Anna Maria dies in the summer of 1848 shortly after giving birth to son Bernard.
In late 1848, William travelled once again to Cincinnati and married Mary Wishmeyer in St. Philomena Church. Mary will have 8 more children (two of which die in infancy) and outlive William by 8 years.
