Obituary in Calvalier County Republican 11/9/1950

Leonard was a resident of Perry Township for over 48 years. He died suddenly on November 5, 1950 at Langdon Hospital. He had been ill with a heart ailment for only a week. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery. He had operated the Dettler farm since 1926 when his dad, Otto retired and moved to Langdon. He was a member of the Catholic Church in Langdon. He is survived by his parents, wife and 5 children. All of the children were home when their father died and attended the funeral. His two sons are Aelred of Langdon and Leonard Gerald, who is in the service with the Army Air Force at Scott Airfield, in Illinois. His three daughters are Moira, who is Mrs. Vincent Yahna of Larimore; Joan who attends the State School of Science at Wahpeton; and Ellen who attends Valley City State Teacher College. His sister, Irene Fox Urlaub also survives. His uncles Frank and Charles Dettler from Long Prairie attended the funeral. Also Mrs. Frank Keating, Jack and Leonard Keating and Paul Grimes of Lampman, Sask. attended. Victor Vietch and Clayton Kitchin of Argusville; Percy Payne of Moorhead, Minn; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Diener of Reynolds, Ind; Mrs. Bernard Richer of Nashwauk, Minn.; and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Yahna and Vincent Yahna of Larimore also attended. Mrs. Vincent Yahna, a daughter of Mr. Dettler, had come earlier, when her father's condition became critical.

Father Vincent J. Wiederhold officiated for the requiem mass at St. Alphonsus Church at 9:30 o'clock. Pall bearers who carried the remains to their resting place in Calvary Cemetery were Fred E. Hawley, Sylveo Chaput, Walter Gellner, Phil Gellner, Walter Keating and Hugh McGauvran.

Sue Sylvester research: Leonard was born on October 6, 1895 in Grey Eagle, Minnesota. His parents were Otto and Margaret Ellen "Nell" Keating Dettler. The family moved to Calvalier County, North Dakota in 1902 and settled in Perry Township. His dad Otto purchased property in Section 15 and built a house in 1912. Leonard was reared on this farm.
Leonard married Mary Bridget "Bea" Fitzgerald on February 13, 1924 in Lampman, Sask., Canada. She had been a school teacher and was staying at Jack and Margaret Keating's home in Lampman, Sask. (His mother's brother) He met Bea while he was visiting his Uncle and Aunt. Leonard Dettler became the second generation of Dettler's to run the family farm.
