Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Plumtree, Nottinghamshire, he served as a Lieutenant in the Bengal Establishment, British Army. On May 11, 1857 at Delhi, India, Lieutenant Raynor was one of nine men who defended the ammunition storehouse for more than five hours against large numbers of mutineers. When the wall was being scaled hope of outside help was gone, they blew up the ammunition, killing many of the mutineers. Of the defenders, five died in the explosion while Lieutenant Forrest and the others survived. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on June 18, 1858 and age 61, he was the oldest man ever to be decorated with that honor. He later achieved the rank of and died of natural causes in Ferozepore, India, at age 65.
