Barbara Young Varney
(October 17, 1927 - March 6, 2008)

A grand English Lady Barbara Young Varney of Layton passed away Thursday, March 6, 2008 at Davis Hospital and Medical Center. She was a loving companion, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

She was born October 17, 1927 in Warminster, Wiltshire, England to George and Gertrude Young. She grew up with her two younger brothers and younger sister on a large English farm called Tascroft where her father worked as a farmer. She was educated in England and after she graduated at 14 she went to work.

During WWII she met a handsome soldier while waiting in line to see a movie. She married that soldier, Junior James Varney, on May 15, 1946 in Warminster. After the war was over she followed Junior to America in August 1946 where they settled in Layton and raised their family.

She had been employed at Morgan Feed Company, HAFB Exchange, Layton City Courts, and K-Mart. Junior and her both retired in 1975.

They spent their retirement years traveling in their motor home and staying in their cabin in the Uintah Mountains. The whole family loved to go snowmobiling in the winters and four-wheeling in the summers. She loved to travel, knit, crochet, do puzzles, crossword puzzles and gardening. She was famous for her green thumb. She could make things grow that the rest of us couldn't.

She was a past member of the Layton Jaycee's where she helped to decorate some prize winning floats for the 4th of July parades. She was a past member of the Layton Eagles also.

She is survived by her long time companion, Maurice Kenney, her three children, Paul Varney, Gale (Sam) Hovey, and Tina (Richard) Kirkham. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Pam Varney, Penny (Jaques) Wright, Paige (Aaron) Loveland, James Scott Boulton, Jenny (Lance) Manning, Tristan Kirkham, Tyler (Jill) Kirkham, Tasha Kirkham, Rian Kirkham, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are her brother Douglas Young and her sister Vivienne Rogers of England.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Junior, two grandsons, Paul and Pat, a granddaughter, Arian and brother, Alan.

Graveside services will be held Monday, March 10, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist's Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Road, So. Ogden.
