Esther Herdt was born on November 27, 1921 in Minatare, Nebraska and passed away January 9, 2013 in Bakersfield, California. Her parents were Conrad and Mary Margeret (Lye) Burbach. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers and 5 sisters, her loving husband of 63 years, Reuben Herdt, and sons Reuben LaVerne Herdt and Duane Conrad Herdt. She is survived by her children, Javene (Sam) Kidwell-Morris, Charlotte (Mark) Penry, and Rickey (Charlene) Herdt, fourteen grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. Esther and Reuben were married New Years Day, 1939 in Torrington, Wyoming where their five children were born. In 1956 they relocated their family to Bakersfield, California. Esther worked as a short-order cook for over 50 years until her retirement in 1990. She enjoyed cooking for her family and they fondly remember her cabbage burgers, noodle and butterball soup with homemade rye bread, fried chicken and homemade cinnamon rolls. She loved to garden and had quite the green thumb. She was always tending to her flowers and house plants. She also loved to crochet and make quilts for her family. Graveside services will be held Friday, January 18, 2013, at 1:00 at Greenlawn Cemetery South on Panama Lane.
