Walter Paul Mikula, 87 years old, passed away on December 20, 2012 at Sheridan Manor while under the care of Hospice Buffalo. A former resident of Cayuga Village, he was born on September 1, 1925 in Niagara Falls, the son of the late Andrew and Eva (Rzucidlo) Mikula.
Mr. Mikula was a graduate of the former Trott Vocational High School. During World War II he served with the Merchant Marines as a Stewards Mate Second Class. He served aboard the William H. Gray, ESSO New Orleans, ESSO New Haven and ESSO Concord. During the 1950's Mr. Mikula was a wrestler known as the "Masked Marvel". He was the owner of Great Lakes Welding during the 1960's. Mr. Mikula was an ironworker on the, Niagara Power Project and the Grand Island Bridges. He was a member and past president of Local No. 9 Ironworkers Union. He was a former Love Canal resident and activist. Mr. Mikula was a "fixture" in the kitchen at John's Flaming Hearth for many years and was always seen riding his bicycle around Niagara Falls.
Mr. Mikula is survived by his daughters, Helen Marie (Peter) Roffle of Michigan and Cynthia Ann (Michael) Mikula Smiszek of Massachusetts. He is survived by his grandchildren, Renee (Phil) Coover, Stephanie Alina Smiszek, Marc, Lauren and Janine Roffle; his brother, John Mikula of Niagara Falls; several nieces and nephews; and his dear friend, Sharyn Vilardo. Mr. Mikula was predeceased by his wife, Helen (Lasher) Mikula, who passed away in 1994.
