The son of William Leo "Bill" Cappel and Helen Bernadine Bimslager, Robert served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

After the war, Robert married Geraldine "Gerry" Hagen on 09 May 1953 in Brussels, Calhoun County, Illinois. They were the parents of 4 children.

Robert was a supervisor for Calhoun County Construction Company. He worked there for 40 years and retired in 1998.

He was a member of a variety of organizations. He belonged to the VFW Alton Post 1308, the Alton American Legion Post 126 and the Alton Optimist Club. He served as an usher at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton.

At the time of his death Alton Memorial Hospital, Robert was 79 years, 5 months and 20 days old. He was survived by his wife, Gerry; 3 sons and 3 daughters-in-law; and 7 grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by 1 son, Mitch Cappel; and 1 brother, Richard Cappel.

Visitation was held at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey on 10 Mar 2009. A funeral Mass was conducted at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton at 10 a.m. the following morning. Military rites were performed by Alton VFW Post 1308.

Robert's body was cremated and inurned at Valhalla Memorial Park at a later date.

The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the Kidney Foundation or the American Cancer Society.

Children: 4 sons.
