The son of Gerhardt Cappel and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Gerdesmeyer, "Bill" married Helen Bimslager on 15 May 1929 in Calhoun County, Illinois. They were the parents of 2 children.

Bill worked as a commercial fisherman. He also was a construction laborer from Labor Local 338 in Wood River, Madison County, Illinois. He retired in 1965.

Bill was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brussels. He also belonged to the Modern Woodmen of America.

At the time of his death at Jersey Community Hospital, Bill was 90 years, 1 month and 11 days old.

He was survived by 1 son and daughter-in-law; 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Paul Cappel of Godfrey, Jerome Cappel of Daytona Beach, Florida, and Ray Cappel of Golden Eagle.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; 1 son, Richard Cappel; 1 brother, Charles Cappel; and 3 sisters, Leona Cappel, Anna Arnold and Mae Schobernd.

Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. on 30 Jan 2001 at Hanks-Gubser Funeral Home in Brussels. A prayer service took place that evening. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. the following morning at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brussels.

Bill was buried next to his wife, Helen, who passed away in 1985.

The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the American Cancer Society or to Masses.
