Obituary from the Edwardsville Intelligencer, Edwardsville, Madison County, Illinois, Tuesday, May 23, 1967:
  John Planitzer, 85, of 418 Bell St., Collinsville, died at 10:20 a.m. Monday at the Pleasant Rest Nursing Home there where he had been a patient 16 weeks. He had been in failing health the past 10 years.
  A retired mine examiner, he had been employed before retirement by the now-defunct St. Louis-O'Fallon Coal Co.
  He was born May 16, 1882 in Germany, and is survived by his wife, Luella M. Planitzer; three daughters, Mrs. Emma A. Sunley, St. Louis, Mrs. Marie McCarthy, Seattle Wash., and Mrs. Wallace (Lucille) Marinko, Belvedere, Calif.; one brother, Rudolph of Glen Carbon; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
  He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church at Collinsville where funeral mass will be said at 11 a.m. Friday. Prior to that, at 10:00, a brief service will be held at the Kassly Funeral Home, Collinsville. Visitation will be at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Wednesday.
  Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery there.
  The rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 8 p.m. Thursday.
