He retired from his plumbing and heating business, J.J.Hessling Plumbing and Heating of Carbondale after 50 years of work. He entered the Army prior to WW II and was a bomber crew member in the Army Air Corps. He rose to the rank of Master Sargent. He was an avid golfer; playing golf into his 90's while scoring in the 90's. He was a Life Member of the Colombia Hose Company of Carbondale and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus.
