He had retired after 33 years of service with the Pennsylvania Gas and Water Company and was previously employed for 17 years by the J.J. Hessling Plumbing and Heating Company of Carbondale. He was educated in Carbondale schools and was a graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School. He was an Army veteran of WW II, serving in the Eurpean theater with the invasion of Europe and was later stationed in England.

He was a 53 year member of the Columbia Hose Company, its youngest president and served as Carbondale Fire Chief from 1968 to 1976.
