Esther G. George, a 13-year resident of Cobleskill and a former resident of Sundown, died Friday, January 19, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Cobleskill. She was 103 years of age.
The daughter of the late Andrew and Juliana Hanford George, she was born July 9, 1897, in Red Hill. She was the widow of Herbert George Sr. who died in July of 1988.
After graduating from Liberty High School, she attended teachers' training courses and taught at the one-room schoolhouse in Red Hill for several years.
Mrs. George was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sundown, the Alchemy Club, Writers' Club and was a published poet and artist. She wrote "A History of Sundown" and a history of the Sundown United Methodist Church.
She is survived by four daughters, Ruth Cicchinelli of Nichols, Linda Greenwald of Cobleskill, Evelyn Kane of Barre, Vt., and Alberta George of North Eastham, Mass.; a son, Vincent George of Sundown; a sister, Inez Gridley of Grahamsville; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Herbert George Jr.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Grahamsville with the Rev. Lorraine Coscia-Ackerman officiating.
Spring interment will be made in the Grahamsville Rural Cemetery.
