MRS. J.W. BRANDENBURG SUMMONED BY DEATH
One of the old time residents, Mrs. J.W. Brandenburg passed away last Wednesday evening at her home in the First Ward. She has been ill for two weeks with a kidney ailment. The funeral services were held Friday at 2:30 p.m. from the home. Rev. Fritscel conducted the services. The remains were laid to rest in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Mary Wilke was born in Mecklenburg, Germany on Sept 23, 1848. She was the oldest child of the family. When a girl she came to America with her parents, locating in Monee, Illinois. She grew to young womanhood at that place and resided there until her marriage to J.W. Brandenburg of Chicago, on Nov 10, 1866. They lived for two years at that place and then came to Independence. She had lived here ever since. Mr. Brandenburg, who was one of the first blacksmiths, preceded her in 1913. Five children were born to them, a daughter Caroline, died at the age of two; and a son, Lieut. Herman Brandenburg met his death ten years ago in a Chicago fire, he being a member of the Chicago Fire Department. Three daughters survive- Mrs. J.J. Kautz, of La Plata, Missouri, and Mrs. C.E. McCracken and Mrs. Badders, of this city. There are also three sisters and a brother; Mrs. C. Andres of Chicago, Mrs. Minnie Zier of Joliet, Illinois, Mrs. Dora Dierking of Bremen, Kansas, and Henry Wilke of Tinley Park, Illinois. Thirteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren are numbered among the survivors. Mrs. Kautz was here for a week preceding her mother's death and all daughters were present during the last illness. She was a quiet woman, the purpose of her life being to serve the family. She was entirely wrapped up in the home life. She has always been, however, a kind neighbor and a friend in need. Many expressions of sympathy are extended to the grieving relatives.
