Gottlieb was born Ulrich Gottlieb Brunner to Johan and Margaret (Abegglen / Ahbecken) Brunner, in Iseltwald, Bern, Switzerland. He emigrated to America in 1853 with his family. Gottlieb worked in the mills in Menomonie and Eau Galle; then later kept a wood yard opposite Red Wing, Minnesota. In February of 1865, he enlisted in Company G, 50th Wisconsin volunteers. He was discharged in June of 1866, and a year later, purchased his farm. He married Doris Rode on January 23, 1872. They had eleven children.
