Michael was born in Iseltwald, Canton Bern, Switzerland and christened Melchior Brunner on 24 September 1843. Served as a Private in the 1st Regiment Cavalry, Field and Staff, Wisconsin Volunteers, Co. G, 16th Infantry, from 28 Mar 1864 to 12 Jul 1865 in the Civil War. Michael was awarded a pension of $8 per month due to an injury to chest and left side which resulted in disease of heart. The pension was increased in 1908 to $30 per month. Michael died at the home of his son Edward after an illness.
