HENRY MUHS

Another of our sturdy and industrious pioneers was called to his reward when death entered the home of Mr. Henry Muhs on Saturday, January 9 at about 10:30 in the morning.

Mr. Henry Muhs was born on January 24, 1861 at Brodersdorf in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, the son of Joachim Muhs and Margaret, nee Stoltenberg. Baptized in infancy in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of his native town, he later was confirmed into the faith of Jesus Christ. When he was 18 years old, he and his brother Hans left Germany and came to America. The young men worked on the farm near Davenport in Scott County, Iowa and in the year 1889 Mr. Henry Muhs came to O'Brien County, four miles south of Hartley. On June 13, 1892 he was united in marriage with Miss Rickey Beinke. Their union was blessed with eight children. Two children died in infancy, and one daughter, Emma, in 1903 at the age of 14 years.

In 1923 Mr. and Mrs. Muhs retired and moved to Hartley, enjoying the fruits of their untiring labors for several years, until heart failure removed the husband from the side of his faithful companion with whom he had been united for nearly forty years. He attained the age of 70 years, 11 months and 15 days.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Rickey Muhs; one son, Louis, south of Hartley; four daughters, Mrs. Barney Krieger of Winnipeg, Canada, Mrs. Genos Orthman of Paullina, Mrs. Eddie Peterson of near Hartley, and Mrs. Clarence Bracker of near Hartley; fourteen grandchildren; one daughter-in-law and four sons-in-law; one brother, Peter Muhs of Hartley; two brothers-in-law, Mr. Wm. Goehring of Hartley and Mr. Herman Koch of Walcott, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Hans Muhs and Mrs. Peter Muhs of Hartley; five nieces and six nephews and many other relatives and friends.

Mr. Muhs was always a kind and indulgent husband and father and will be greatly missed both in his home and by his friends.

Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, January 12 at the home at 1:30 and at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church with Rev. F. W . Budy officiating. The Brotherhood quartet sang several selections. Interment was at Pleasant View Cemetery
