Peter Sydney Marshall, son of Joseph and Eizabeth Zink Marshall was born 9-26-1840, and departed this life 3-12-1922, aged 81 years, 5 months and 16 days. He was left without a mother when only 3 years of age and the only mother's care that he ever knew was that of his grandmother Zink.
When dissolution threatened the union of the United States he volunteered in his Country's cause in Company D, 38th Regiment of Indiana Infantry, September 25th, 1861. He was seriously wounded at the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, 10-8-1862 and was sent to the hospital where he was discharged from service, 2-5-1863.
He was married to Mary Adeline Martin Zink 12-25-1863 and was a true and affectionate father to the 2 children, Joseph A. Zink and Minnie M. Zink, now Mrs. J.P. Gilmer of Linneus, MO. whom he always loved and cherished as his own. Showing the same affection for the 8 grandchildren.
There were born to this union seven children, namely Don S. Marshall who died 3-30-1915; Lillie E. Marshall now wife of John M. Colglazier; Nannie E. Marshall who lived with her father up to his death; Oliver P. Marshall who also lived with him at his death; Otis A. Marshall, Joseph Ernest Marshall, and Ellsworth Judson, all living in Washington County. Besides his 7 children he leaves 23 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren, 2 sisters Mrs. Jane Watts of Salem and Mrs. Nancy Gibbons of Duncan Oklahoma and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn his loss. His beloved companion died May 27. 1909 after years of suffering. She was an invalid for 25 years and not able to walk for 19 years. He was always kind and attentive to her , never neglecting her in anything that could be done for her comfort and happiness. He was honest and conscientious man, big hearted and true to his friends; the poor and needy were never turned away empty handed. He was a kind and loving father and was always happy to have his children and grandchildren or friends around him. He was an ideal neighbor and will be sadly missed in the community. He gave always to the church and to the needy of his means. His honesty and integrity should be an inspiration not only to the family and relatives but to all who knew him.
The funeral service was held at the Marshall homestead, southwest of Salem , Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock , conducted by Rev. J.C. Pitt of Louisville. All honors of a military funeral was given the aged veteran by Cecil Grimes Post No. 41 American Legion.
