NEWPORT NEWS — Dewey Sosebee, 84, died on Wednesday, April 3, 2002.

Born on Jan. 26, 1918, in Clarksville, Ga., he had been a Peninsula resident since 1943. He was a World War II veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy in the Philippines. He was well-known and respected on the Peninsula. He owned and managed several Stokes Pharmacy drugstores, which in the late '50s through the early '80s were a gathering place for local shop owners, residents and Newport News police officers. One of his greatest passions was singing. He started out in the late 1940s with a barbershop quartet. He also performed locally and did singing spots on WGH FM radio. He also appeared on the Ted Mack Amateur Hour television show in New York.

Dewey later organized a gospel group named the "Dominionaires." They performed locally and throughout the East, with groups such as the Blackwood Brothers, Blue Ridge Quartet, Oak Ridge Quartet and many other well-known groups. In the 1960s, Dewey had his own Sunday morning gospel program on WVEC radio. With his very good friend, John Ward, they were the cornerstones of the Peninsula Gospel Singing Association. They planned and organized local gospel singing events for several decades.

He played baseball in the 1930s and later shared his passion for the game by getting involved with youth baseball on the Peninsula. He was involved with the Babe Ruth league. He was also a supporter and sponsor of the Parkview Little League in Newport News. Having served as president of the Warwick Pony League and district director of the Peninsula Colt league, he was very active with Thoroughbred baseball and other youth baseball organizations.

He was a 32nd Degree Mason, member of Warwick Masonic Lodge No. 336 A.F. & A.M and also the Scottish Rite. He was a member of Woodmen of the World Association and an active member of West Hampton Baptist Church.

Mr. Sosebee was preceded in death by his parents, Ione and Ernest Sosebee of Clarksville, Ga.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Palmer Sosebee; children, Carole Strickland and Dennis Shaw of Yorktown, Nancy Seay of Phoenix, Ariz., Nathan Sosebee and his wife, Kathy, of Hampton and Jeff Sosebee and his wife, Melanie, of Charleston, S.C.; six grandchildren, Lisa, Robin, Chris, Cheryl, Cindy and Madison; his great-granddaughter, Lauren; two brothers, Charles Sosebee of Las Vegas, Nev., and Tony Sosebee of Clarksville, Ga.; and five sisters, Evelyn Tankersly, Christine Spivey, Grace Burton and Annette Tench, all of Clarksville, Ga., and Gail Kastner of Powder Springs, Ga.
