Elwood was the son of Glenn and Margaret Brugger Roehl. He graduated from Janesville Senior High School in 1965 and attended the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point for two years before he enlisted in the United States Army in October of 1967. His tour of duty in Vietnam began on July 30, 1969. His unit delivered supplies to troops. He suffered injuries on September 18, 1969 in a vehicle accident in Vietnam and died of his injuries a few days later. He was preceded in death by his father. He was survived by his mother, three brothers and two sisters.
