Funeral services for Pauline Howl, 95, of Portales, will be at 3:00 PM, Friday, June 21, 2013, in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Dr. David McFadden officiating. Pauline Howl was born October 6, 1917, in Portales to the home of Rosa and Leonard Alvin Fails and died June 18, 2013, also in Portales. When she was young girl the family moved to Jal where they made their home for about six years until her father died. The family moved back to Portales, and Pauline graduated from Portales High School in 1935. She trained as a beauty operator, and worked till she was married to Elbert Howl on November 21, 1939. Her life was her love for her family and her home. Because of the closeness in age of her four children, the Howl house was one of the gathering places for the neighborhood kids and their school friends. When Pauline turned 62, she had a swimming pool installed in her backyard for all of the family members to enjoy.
Pauline was hypoglycemic. So, she read and gathered all the information she could find in order to help herself and anyone else needing advice on the condition. Pauline was an excellent seamstress, and enjoyed making clothes for the whole family. One of her special projects each year was creating Halloween costumes for her children, as well as for herself and her husband.
Mrs. Howl held the distinction of Life Master in Tournament Bridge, and played each week in the Bridge club in Clovis. She even had friends in Phoenix that she would contact when they were in the area, so she could play there as well. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Portales.
Pauline is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Glen and Candy Howl and Steve and Marcia Howl of Portales; a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Bobby Crane of Portales; ten grandchildren, Michelle (Derald) Hobbs, David Howl, Caleb (Cami) Howl, Kathryn Howl, Mark (Kelley) Howl, Kyla (Mike) Vaughan, Lori (John) Ullum, Jason (Nikki) Howl, Kodi (Leslie) Crane and Kevin (Ashlie) Crane; 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alvin (Pete) Fails of Clovis and Albert (Buster) Fails of Portales; and a sister, Mildred Bessie (MB) Worley of Roswell.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Randolph and Jeremiah Fails, two sisters, Felicia Fails and Zenomia (Shorty) Wiley, a son, John Howl who died June 18, 2009, and by Elbert (Eb) Howl, her husband of 59 years, who died February 8, 2000.
