Funeral rites for Joseph Solomon Baum, 60 years old, long-time dry goods merchant here, who died early Sunday morning at his apartment in the Baum store building, were conducted yesterday morning at the Hurlbut chapel. Rabbi I. L. Rypins of the United Hebrew Congregation was in charge. Pallbearers were Robert Cole of Galena, Mercer Arnold, William Bullard, Ben F. Wurzel, Dave Baum and G. Ferguson. A motor escort was formed to accompany the body to Fort Scott, Kan., for burial.

Veteran Dry Goods Merchant Dies
in Apartment Here—Ill Only
a Week.


Funeral services for Joseph Solomon Baum, 60 years old, veteran dry goods merchant of Joplin and widely known in the district, who died at 4:30 o'clock Sunday morning at his apartments in the Baum store building, 814 Main street, will be conducted at 9:30 o'clock Wednesday morning: at the Hurlbut chapel. Rabbi I. L. Rypins of the United Hebrew Congregation will officiate. Pallbearers will be Mercer Arnold, Robert Coles of Galena, William Bullard, Ben F. Wurzel, Dave Baum and G. Ferguson. A funeral cortege will accompany the body to Fort Scott, Kan., where burial services will be conducted.

Mr. Baum's death was due to acute dilation of the heart, which followed bronchial pneumonia. He had been ill a week, having been taken to St. John's hospital Saturday, December 15, after he had taken an overdose of an opiate. He developed bronchial pneumonia the following Monday, but his condition improved so that he was removed to his apartments Wednesday.

Friday he became worse, and his illness gradually became more serious until his death early Sunday morning.

Mrs. Estella Baum, his daughter, who is a trained nurse, arrived Tuesday and was with him until his death.

Mr. Baum had resided here more than twenty-five years and had operated a mercantile establishment on Main street during that time. For several years he was proprietor of a store between Ninth and Tenth streets on Main street, and later acquired the property at 814 Main street, to which he moved his business.

Born June 14, 1868, at Butler, Ill., he went to Galena at an early age. It was in that city that he received his elementary education. Later he attended a military college at Fayetteville, Ark., which became the University of Arkansas. After he completed his education, he returned to Galena and for a number of years operated a dry goods
store there.

In 1897 he came to Joplin and established a dry goods store here.

Surviving, besides the daughter, are four sisters. Miss Lena Baum and Miss Rosa Baum, who operate a mercantile store at Galena, Mrs, J. McMichel of Reed Springs, Mo., and Mrs. Albert Baum of Colorado Springs, Colo., and a brother, Leo Baum of Chickasha, Okla.

Joseph Solomon Baum, 60 years old, dry goods merchant in Joplin many years and widely known here, died at 4:30 o'clock yesterday morning at his apartments in the Baum, store building, 814 Main street, from acute dilation of the heart, which followed bronchial pneumonia.

Mr. Baum had been ill a week, having been taken to St. John's hospital Saturday, December 15, after he had taken an overdose of an opiate. His condition improved Sunday, but Monday he developed bronchial pneumonia. He rallied from the pneumonia attack Tuesday and was improved to the extent that he was taken to his apartment from the hospital Wednesday.

He suffered a setback Friday, however, and his condition became gradually worse until his death early yesterday morning. His daughter, Mrs. Estella Baum of New York City, who is a trained nurse, arrived at his bedside last Tuesday and was with him continually until his death.

Mr. Baum had been a resident of Joplin more than twenty-five year's and, during that entire time, had been proprietor of a mercantile establishment on Main street. For several years he operated a store located between Ninth and Tenth streets on Main street, and later acquired the property at 814 Main street, to which he moved his business.
