Vernon P. Roepke, 87, Manhattan, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2002, at a Manhattan hospital.

Mr. Roepke was a journeyman electrician and had worked for Yeo and Trubey Electric and Ackers Electric before he retired in 1979. He served in the Navy as a fireman first class until 1946 and was a veteran of World War II .

He was born March 24, 1914, in Barnes, the son of Frank W. and Amelia Webber Roepke. He graduated from Manhattan High School and was a lifelong resident of the Manhattan area.

Mr. Roepke was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Manhattan, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local No. 226, the Elks Lodge and the American Legion.

He married Helen I. Eikenhorst on March 24, 1937, in Manhattan. She died Dec. 4, 1995.

Survivors include two sons, Richard "Dick" Roepke, Manhattan, and Duane Roepke, Chandler, Ariz.; two daughters, Marilyn Davidson, Westminster, Colo., and Sue Pruett, Topeka; two sisters, Lyla Schrock, Topeka, and Mabel Trekell, Fallbrook, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
