June 6, 1929 - Carroll Times - Mrs. Gerd J. Eilts, mother of Mrs. J.B. McCrary of this city, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles J. Subbert, at Lidderdale, last Wednesday evening, June 19, at 8 o'clock. For several months she had visibly failed in health, and the frailties of age, combined with other ailments, were the cause of her death.
Mrs. Eilts was the only remaining charter member of the Lutheran congregation at Lidderdale, having belonged to it uninterruptedly from the time of its organization in 1872. She was also a charter member of the Ladies Aid, and was the oldest member of the congregation. She was a faithful member of the Lutheran church, and a regular church goer until her declining health made it impossible for her to attend services.
Mrs. Eilts, as Maria Frederica Janssen, was born July 4, 1841, in East Frisia, Germany, where she received her schooling and spent her girlhood. In 1867 she was married to Wilke Jacobs, with whom she emigrated to America in April, 1869 and the home was established at Sterling, Illilnois. In 1871 her husband died, and the young widow and her two children moved to Carroll county, making their home with her brother, Tobe Janssen.
On September 19, 1873, she was united in marriage to Gerd J. Eilts. To this union six children were born, two of whom died in infancy. Mr. Ellts passed away in March, 1911. After his death Mrs. Eilts lived the greater portion of the time with her daughter, Mrs. Subbert.
Six children are left to mourn the loss of this good Christian mother: Mrs. J.B. McCrary, of Carroll; Wilke Jacobs, Mrs. C.J. Subbert, Mrs. George Harmening, Mrs. J.C. Wenck, and Mrs. C.L. Platt, all of Sheridan township. She is also mourned by two brothers of Ida Grove and one sister in Germany; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Tobe Janssen of Carroll and one who lives at Ida Grove; 29 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
After brief liturgical services at the home, funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon, June 22 at the Lidderdale Lutheran church Rev. R. Herrmann officiating. The large attendance was a final tribute to the high esteem in which the departed one was held by all. Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery at Lidderdale.
Relatives from a distance in attendance at the funeral were: William Jacobs, Louis Jacobs, Wilke Jacobs and Mr. and Mrs. John Jacobs, of Memphis, Neb.; Christ Janssen, Mr. and Mrs. Ommo Janssen, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Fredericksen, Mr and Mrs. Louie Renika, Mr. and Mrs Christ Peterson, Mr. and Mrs. Carsen Hendricksen, Mrs. Alfred Janssen, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Janssen, Herman Janssen, Mr. and Mrs. Tony Hansson, Wm. Janssen, John Janssen and daughter, Gladys, of Ida Grove; Clara Subbert, of Fairmont, Minn,; Mrs. Henry Wurr of Sumner; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Eden, of Akron, Iowa.
