John Fred Wessel was born on Apr. 22, 1892 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., Kentucky. He was the son of Herman Henry Wessel Sr. (1865-1938) and Theresa Margaret Luken (1858-1921). Both of John's parents were born in Jefferson Co., KY and are buried there in the St. Michael Cemetery.
John's father, Herman, was the son of German immigrants, Franz Anton "Anthony" Wessell (1819-1872) and Mary Stegemehl (1822-1872), both also buried in St. Michael Cemetery. They arrived in American in 1845 and 1849 respectively, married in Louisville in 1850.
John's mother, Theresa, was also born in Jefferson Co., KY. She was the daughter of Wilhelm Anton "William" Luken (1825-1887) and Adelaid Ellen Hoeck (1825-1913). Both of her parents were also born in Germany and both died in Louisville, KY, where they are buried in the St. Johns Cemetery.
About 1916, John married Edith F. Gagel in Jefferson Co., KY. Both John and Edith were about 24/25 years of age. She was the daughter of Joseph Riley "Joe" Gagel (1881-1950) and Barbara Weber (1869-1960), the first born of their six known children. Her father was a long time vegatable farmer having a farm on present day Dixie Highway. Holy Cross High School is now located on part (23 acres) of her family's farm.
John and Carrie were married about 25 years and had two children. They were Mildred Theresa "Min" Wessel (1917-1994) and Mary Verna "Pat" Wessel (1924-1985). Pat was married to Gail Leonard Salter (1923-2006). Mildred never married.
John's 1917 WWI draft registration, which he completed himself, says he was a gardener who had his own business. His 1942 draft card shows his occupation as "farming and live stock". His newspaper obituary reads that he was a retired truck farmer.
John (73) died from throat cancer on Nov. 1, 1965 in Jefferson Co., KY. John's wife, Edith (74), died from a heart attack just five minutes later after hearing of her husband's death. Both had been taken to the St. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital. They are buried side-by-side in the Calvary Cemetery.
