was a German singer, allegedly of Russian ancestry, with an extraordinary vocal range of four and a half octaves, ranging from the soprano to bass registers.
Rebroff was born in Berlin as Hans-Rolf Rippert.
Rebroff was born in Spandau in the family of a German engineer. His mother, 'Natalia Nelina' well knew Fyodor Chaliapin.
In 1954 he was accepted into the Black Sea Cossack Choir, which was directed at that time by Andrei Ivanovich Sholuh (1895-1979). As the singer recalled in a rare interview, it was Sholuh that gave him the idea to take the stage name of "Rebroff", translated into Russian last name and the name of his father, an engineer from Hesse Paul Rippert (German die Rippe - 'Rib').
He was famous for singing Russian folk songs, but also performed opera, light classics and folk songs from many other countries. He was known on stage for his gusto. He performed over 6,000 concerts in his career.
Ivan Rebroff described himself as international, the "connection between East and West".
He became a citizen of Greece and lived on the Greek island of Skopelos in the Sporades.
UPDATED INFO:
He died in Frankfurt after a long illness. Four days after his death, His Brother (Hans Rippert) inherited nothing. Ivan Rebroff's manager, Mrs. Weber, inherited everything. I know this because Ivan Rebroff is my Dads uncle. He wanted to be cremated, and have his ashes thrown in the Aegean Sea... But his ashes were stolen soon after his funeral.
