Adam Egly Of Geneva Dies Late Saturday

Heart Attack Fatal To Community Leader, 74; Rites Tuesday

Adam Egly, 74, prominent Geneva businessman and community leader, died at 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the Clinic Hospital, Bluffton, following a heart attack. Death was unexpected. Mr. Egly had been in the hospital for some time where he submitted to gall bladder surgery. He was recuperating well and was slated for dismissal from the hospital this week. He was apparently feeling well all day Saturday and died very suddenly.

A lifelong resident of Geneva and community, Mr. Egly was president of the Geneva Milling Company which also owns the Bryant Elevator Company, and the Bryant Hatchery. The firm was started way back in 1903 and Mr. Egly had been associated with it since. He retired in 1957 as a manager of the firm after serving in that capacity for 26 years but he still retained the presidency of the company.

Mr. Egly was a member of the Geneva Methodist Church and a member of the official board of the church, was a member of the Northeastern Indiana Grain Dealers Association and a past member and director of the Indiana Grain and Feed Dealers Association. He was a former Geneva town and school official and was one of the original directors of the Limberlost Memorial Association responsible for the creation of Rainbow Lake, the development of the bird sanctuary and in making the Limberlost cabin in Geneva a state memorial. Mr. Egly was one of the real boosters in the movement to honor the late Mrs. Gene Stratton Porter. An unselfish and highly esteemed citizen, Mr. Egly spent much of his time on projects to make Geneva and southern Adams County a better place in which to live. He devoted many hours to church, school, town and community projects and served on many important committees.

Born in Hartford Township Sept. 1, 1886, Egly was the son of Samuel and Fannie Schindler Egly. He spent his early days on the farm and when his father entered the milling business in Geneva back in 1903, he started working in the mill and learned the business from the ground up.

Surviving are the wife, the former Ethel Harbour; a son, Arnold, in Texas; two daughters, Mrs. Don (Virginia) Lagel, Bradenton, Florida and Mrs. Myron (Vena) Simmons, Geneva; five grandchildren; two brothers, Prof. William Egly, Ann Arbor, Michigan and Albert Egly, Fort Wayne, and a sister, Mrs. Raymond (Rachel) Filer, Geneva. A sister, Mrs. Ezra Ruple, is deceased.

The body is at the Hardy and Hardy Funeral Home in Geneva where friends may call and where services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Rev. Howard Kress, pastor of the Geneva Methodist Church will officiate and burial will be in the Evangelical Mennonite Church Cemetery west of Berne.
