Farm Boy, 15 Dies in Ditch Accident

Harry Loose

The body of Harry Loose, 15, was recovered last night from the Nine Mile drain ditch where it was pinned beneath the surface of the water by tons of earth, W. H. Kirwin, assistant county attorney, reported. Apparently the youth had stepped too close to the edge of the ditch and the bank gave way.

Loose was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Loose who live 12 miles east of Scottsbluff.

Harry stayed at home to attend to the irrigating when the family came to Scottsbluff yesterday afternoon, Kirwin said. After coming home, Carl and another son, Melvin, went looking for Harry. They found his body, with only a small portion protruding from the mass of dirt, in the ditch drain.

A physician, called from Minatare, pronounced the boy dead.

The accident probably occurred shortly after 1 p.m., Dirwin said. The whole bank, weakened by irrigation seepage, gave way when the boy stopped on it dropping him into the ditch, Kirwin said.

He said that it was clearly a case of accidental death. The body was recovered at about 5:30 p.m. and was brought to Knight's. Surviving besides his parents, are four brothers, Carl Jr., Melvin, Willard and Victor and four sisters, Juanita, Betty, Elnora and Judy, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wamboldt of Scottsbluff.

Harry Loose was a member of the German Lutheran Church of Minatare. He was born at Gering on Feb. 5, 1928. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
