Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Seaham, England, he served as Private in the 9th Lancers, British Army. During an attack at Lucknow, India, on March 19, 1858, Private Newell went to the aid of a whose horse had fallen. Under heavy fire from a large number of the enemy, he rescued his comrade and took him to safety. He was killed four months later in actions near Haryana, India. For most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was posthumously awarded Victoria Cross on December 24, 1858.
