FREDELAKE FAMILY

Adoph Fredelake was born in Germany in 1844 and came to America in 1861. The first home for the immigrant was Cincinnati, Ohio.

Elizabeth Kulhmann, born in Germany in 1850 came to America in 1874.

Cincinnati, Ohio, was the first home in the new world for the German lady. There she met and fell in love with Adolph Fredelake and they were married in October of 1874. Their first child, Henry, was born in 1876 in Cincinnati. They young family decided to seek a home in the west and they arrived in Windthorst, Kansas on June 1, 1878.

Their first home was an eighty acre farm, all they could get at that time. Many of the early day settlers were on farms that size. Seven years later they acquired their permanent home, now owned and occumpied by a granddaughter, Anna (Fredelake) Strong and family. In 1878 another son, Joseph Arnold, was born, but lived only three weeks. In 1880 another son, Frank, was born. Their only daughter, Clara, was born in 1883. Twin sons, Adolph and William were born in 1885. Twin Adolph died at the age of seven months. The youngest son Anthony was born in 1888.

They went through all the hardships of the pioneers with courage and fortitude of those early day Germans. They were thrifty and they learned to farm the land so that it would produce good crops. In 1907 and 1908 when plans were being made for a new rectory and larger Catholic Church to be built in Windthorst, Adoph and his wife Elizabeth graciously donated land for that purpose.

Sorrow came to the family when their father became ill and passed away in June of 1917 at the age of 73. Mother Elizabeth remained on the farm until her death in November of 1940. She was 90 years of age.
