Death struck twice in the same Marcus family last week: Mrs. Mary J. Mean, 59, passed away Thursday afternoon, Sept. 19, following a long illness, and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Clyde Means, died the following morning [Sept. 20th] at Sioux City. She had been ill for a short time.
The elder Mrs. Means was born in Cherokee, April 24, 1898; her husband, Louis Means, passed away in July, 1948.
Surviving her are two daughters: Darlene Means of Marcus, and Mrs. Francis Cronin of Meriden; two sons: Clyde and Harold Means, both of Marcus; and ten grandchildren. Other survivors include seven sisters: Mrs. George Wernes of Leeds, Mrs. Elmer Donner of Marcus, Mrs. Bernard Curry of Cleghorn, Mrs. Pete Christoffel, Mrs. Alf Pick, Mrs. Jim Tracy and Mrs. Emmert Tentinger, all of Remsen; and one brother, Jack Thiel of Remsen.
Funeral services were Saturday, Sept. 21, at 9:30 a.m., from Holy Name Catholic Church of Marcus, with Father Leo McCoy officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Robert Hazen, Merle Treinen and William Christoffel of Remsen, Glenn Pick of Granville and Arnold Rueter and Vernon Donner of Marcus. [next two lines not clear] Mass servicers were Bernard, Marian, Bobby and Danny Thiel of Remsen and Dennis Delaney of Marcus.
Out-of-town relatives attending [possibly both] services were Mrs. Josephine Mojires, Henry Treinen, Elmer Treinen, Peter Treinen and Mr. and Mrs. Anton Schlitz [Schiltz], all of Remsen, Celic Wanderchud, Alvina Feller, Liz Arens and Anne Schlitz [Schiltz], all of Le Mars, Mr. and Mrs. Nick Kans of Adrian, Minn., and Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Eischen of Cherokee.
