Born in Kollosomp, Stuhm, Westpreußen (Kolozab, Poland), he immigrated with his parents, Frank and Anna, in May 1872. The Schuman family lived also in Oschen, a small village to the east of Marienwerder, Westpreußen (Kwidzyn, Poland). The Schuman family (originally "Scheumanski" and "Schemanski") is designated by the city of Chicago as an official "Re-builder" family after the Chicago fire of 1871. Ferdinand was a bricklayer, like generations of his family. He was married to Rose Bertha Myers, of Troy, Kansas, who he met while working in Atchison, Kansas, on 19 June 1901. He was the son of Frank Schuman and Anna Gutrich (originally Gutzek). He and Rose were the parents of six children: Frank, Mary Agnes, Bernard, Leo, Bertha, and Edith "Kitty" Schuman
