Ferdinand was a bricklayer, like generations of his family. He was married to Rose Bertha Myers, of Troy, Kansas, who he met while working in Atchison, Kansas, on 19 June 1901. He was the son of Frank Schuman and Anna Gutrich (originally Gutzek). He and Rose were the parents of six children: Frank, Mary Agnes, Bernard, Leo, Bertha, and Edith "Kitty" Schuman
