Jan was born near Wiele, Poland, in the village of Bak. He and his wife immigrated to the US on the Steamship Franklin and landed at the Castle Garden Immigration Center in New York on 7 May 1872. From there they went to Chicago, then to Winona, MN, and finally to Warsaw, ND, in 1878 where they homesteaded and raised 13 children.
