The following is a English translation of the original obituary for Christoph Schatte written in Wendish by Pastor Jan Kilian:

Christopher Schatte, farmer and blacksmith at Serbin, died at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, 29 April 1870 and was buried the next day in St Paul's Cemetery, Serbin, Texas. Pastor Kilian gave a brief funeral devotion at the home based on Romans 7:24-25, a blessing at the grave, and a funeral sermon on 1 May, Dom Jubilate Sunday, based on Ecclesiastes 7:1-5. He died from a stomach ailment at the age of 45 years and 24 days. Christopher is survived by his widow, one son and one stepsister.

In honor and love we remember Christopher Schatte, farmer and blacksmith in Serbin, who the Lord called from this world on Friday, a week ago, at 3:30 p.m. His body received a Christian burial yesterday, a week ago, with a brief funeral devotion at home and blessings at the grave. Today a week ago, in the afternoon, we honored him with a funeral sermon.

He was born in Klitten on 4 April 1825. His father was John Schatte, home owner in Klitten. His deceased mother was Anna née Schuster from Jahmen. At his baptism he received the name Christopher. In his childhood he was well brought up and sent to school, where he received the necessary Christian and other education. After his confirmation he worked for two years and learned how to become a blacksmith. At the age of 24 he married Rosina Domaschk from Reichwalde with whom he lived together peacefully for 21 years. They were blessed by God with three children from which one son and one daughter died before him and one son survives him.

As far as his last illness is concerned, he was sick for eight months and for two weeks he was laid up. Twice in the course of his illness he had received Holy Communion, the last time 14 days ago. Being so strengthened, he waited for the end which came on Friday afternoon at 3:30. He was 45 years and 24 days old.

May the Lord comfort the mourning widow; the mourning son Andrew; the mourning sister Anna, widow of the late John Merting, homeowner in Thomaswalde; and other friends near and far.

Thank you to John Merting and his whole family for demonstrated help and love; to George Merting and family for demonstrated help and love; to Frederick and Anna Karcher for demonstrated love, great help and transporting the body; to John
and Anna Schatte on Long Prairie Branch for demonstrated love; to Matthew and Christiana Domaschk for demonstrated love; to John and Anna Hohle and the whole family for demonstrated love; to Christopher Domaschk for demonstrated help and love; to Rosina Paulick, Maria Kokel, Eleonora Schuster, Agnes Symn for demonstrated help and love; to both grave diggers, pallbearers, and all who were present to mourn.
